SHIFT

This project tackles issues like sustainability, accessibility and adaptability of spaces through a prefabricated modular housing concept and material choice. Followed by examples of different floor plans that encourage social inclusion and participation in homes, a crucial aspect for the benefit of our wellbeing - which has become a serious concern during the Covid19 pandemic.

A prefabricated modular home system tackling multigenerational living through adapting spaces to enhance social inclusion, putting health and wellbeing at the centre of its design process.

Prefabricated modular interior and exterior walls, floors and roof systems that allow people to build their own homes, adapting as their needs change. Addressing the problem through material choice and example of a home concept built around courtyards - enhancing connectivity, tackling isolation.

The material used accross the design is Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). It is a sustainable material that is light weight and strong. Slowly replacing concrete and steel not only because of its strength but also because of its negative energy usage in the construction process.

The standardising of CLT finishes allows for modular pieces to either be recycled at the end of its useful life, or rejoin a circular economy, allowing people to repurchase modular pieces at a lower cost and add to their homes.

Wood is a natural insulator, meaning that less energy will be required to maintain the temperatures in the home, saving energy on heating. Green roofs also boosts thermal efficiency and reduces C02 emissions. Lower energy bills means that people would not have to stress as much about their day to day lives and will be able to live in comfort.

It is in human nature to enjoy being in control, and so this modular home system is perfect as it allows for its owners to build as they go, provided they have the land space. This allows them to be at ease, and not have to worry about things too far in the future, that they may not have control over. These are the little things that unknowingly make our lives easier and bring ease to our minds. Therefore, improving our overall health and wellbeing in the long run.
